The case study is based in the article written by MaryBeth Matzek, called “R U on @ Gen Y?”. This article can be found in the magazine “Encouraging BT”s Authentic Voice of Leadership, strategic communication management, number 12. The Millennials, also known as generation Y, are the group of individuals who were born from the nineteen eighties up to the year of two thousand. It is a generation that has been characterized by the way they communicate to each other and for being technology savvies. According to the president of Inacom, Frank Albi, “employers are going to find this generation communicates differently” (McShane and Glinow, 2013, p283). Indeed, this generation lives their lives by computer and cell phones. If you take these technological instruments from them it is almost like taking a piece of their lives from them because computers and cell phones are a part of who they are. It is their social identity and how they live and connect with their friends and family. They not only use these instruments to communicate with one another but also as their means for getting their news, research and information that they need. According to MaryBeth Matzek, most of the millennials are logged to their computer and cell phones almost twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. They check those instruments almost compulsively every minute and most of them checked them automatically as they wake up. The author also shows that texting and instant messages are the way that they express themselves and exchange information because they prefer short and nice communication instead of long treatises (McShane and Glinow, 2013, p283).

Communicating With the Millennials Essentially, communication has become the most indispensable element in an institution in determining the organizational success. An institution cannot exist without communication, especially the type of communication that keeps the employees up to date and well-informed about the organization’s vision and strategies as well as to help every individual in the company to work together with a common purpose. Today’s assertion has become more limited in the face-to-face communication and phone conversations versus the newer age of an era with the creation of text messaging, blogging and instant messaging. These days, companies need to introduce more of a blended form of communication technologies in their workplace.
Unquestionably, there is a clear generational gap in many work environments; there is a need for an entire institution P-to-O expectancy on each individual level with every employee. If the majority of the staff members participate in this motivational theory, then there will be a higher probability of the majority of the staff utilizing each other’s assets, the company’s blog as well as meetings and training sessions among the staff members.
For instance, the Millennials could help the Baby Boomers by training them on blogging on the company’s website. Equally, the Baby Boomers will train their younger colleagues about proper face-to-face manners in the workplace. To insure all colleagues are well adjusted to the changes, training sessions as well as utilizing meetings such as future search. With this in mind, it can help everyone prove a better insight on the future changes as well as, being on the same page about the new changes in sharing information and knowledge.
